Turn the rug over. A hand-knotted rug shows its pattern clearly on the back, knot by knot, with small irregularities. A hand-tufted rug has a cloth backing glued over the back, and a machine-made rug has a perfectly even grid.
Five checks
- The back. On a hand-knotted rug the design shows through on the back almost as clearly as on the front, and the rows of knots are slightly uneven. A canvas or felt-like backing that hides the back means hand-tufted. A rigid, perfectly regular grid means machine-made.
- The fringe. On a hand-knotted rug the fringe is the ends of the warp threads, the rug's own foundation running from one end to the other. A fringe sewn on as a separate strip points to a tufted or machine-made rug.
- The knots. Bend a corner back and part the pile. At the base you see small knots wrapped around the warp threads in rows. Tufted pile is yarn punched through a backing and held by glue.
- Small irregularities. Sides that are not perfectly straight, a band where a color shifts (called abrash) or a motif slightly off center are signs of hand work, not defects.
- Weight and price. A hand-knotted rug is dense and heavy for its size, and an 8x10 takes a weaver months to finish. A very low price for a "hand-knotted" rug deserves a second look.
Hand-knotted, hand-tufted and machine-made
Hand-knotted
Every knot is tied by hand on a loom. The back shows the pattern knot by knot, the fringe is the rug's own warp threads, and with care the rug lasts for generations. It can be hand washed and rewoven.
Hand-tufted
Yarn is punched through canvas with a tufting gun, then glued and covered with a cloth backing, and the fringe is usually sewn on. It lasts years rather than generations, because the glue dries out with age, and washing and repair are limited.
Machine-made
Woven on a power loom, with an even, regular grid on the back and a sewn-on fringe. How long it lasts depends on the fiber, and washing and repair are limited.
Why it matters
A hand-knotted rug holds its value, can be washed and repaired for decades and often outlives the house it was bought for. A tufted or machine-made rug can look similar on day one and still be the right choice for a busy room or a smaller budget, as long as it is sold as what it is.
Every handmade rug we sell carries a lifetime guarantee of authenticity and quality: if a rug listed as hand-knotted ever proves otherwise, bring it back for a full refund. Our Chicago showroom also carries machine-made rugs at lower starting prices, always labeled as machine-made. Browse hand-knotted rugs, or chat with us to ask about any rug.
