What Size Rug Pad Do I Need?

A rug pad should be about 1.5 inches smaller than the rug on every side, so 3 inches shorter in each direction. The pad stays hidden, the rug's edges slope gently to the floor, and there is nothing to trip on. You don't have to do the math: we cut every Durahold Plus rug pad to your rug's exact size, free.

Why the size matters

A pad the same size as the rug peeks out and lifts the edges, which looks untidy and catches feet. A pad cut 1.5 inches in stays out of sight, keeps the rug flat and grips it from edge to edge.

Why use a rug pad at all

A pad stops sliding and curling corners, protects wood and stone floors from grit, and makes a thin rug feel thicker underfoot. Kilims and flatweaves slide the most, so they need a pad most.

How to measure your rug

• Measure the rug itself, not the fringe.
• Handmade and antique rugs are rarely perfectly square: measure both ends and both sides, and use the smaller numbers.
• Round or oval rug: measure across the widest points.
