What Size Rug Do I Need?

Leave about 18 inches of floor around the rug and keep at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on it. In most living rooms that means an 8x10 or a 9x12. Room by room:

Living room rug size

Front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug: 8x10 or 9x12. All the furniture on the rug: 9x12 or 10x14. A small seating area or a loveseat: 5x8 or 6x9.

Dining room rug size

Measure the table and add 24 to 30 inches on every side, so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out. A table for six usually takes an 8x10; a table for eight, a 9x12.

Bedroom rug size

King bed: 9x12. Queen bed: 8x10. Full bed: 6x9 or 8x10. Twin bed: 5x8. The rug should reach 18 to 24 inches past the sides and the foot of the bed. A pair of runners, one on each side, works too.

Hallway, kitchen and stairs

A runner 2'6" to 3' wide and about 2 feet shorter than the hall, so a little floor shows at each end. In front of a kitchen sink, a 2x3 or a short runner.

Entryway and bathroom

A 2x3 or a 3x5, placed where the door can swing over it.
