Antique Persian Mahal rug, oversized 12x18 (12'–12'4" x 18'), hand-knotted wool — a navy Herati (Mahi) field framed by a brick-red palmette border, ivory and green guard stripes. A true palace-size antique with honest, time-worn character, at a direct-import price from Rugistan®.

  • Construction: Hand-knotted
  • Origin: Persia (Mahal / Arak region, Sultanabad weaving district)
  • Age: Antique, circa early 1900s
  • Material: Wool pile on cotton foundation
  • Size: 12x18 (measured 12' to 12'4" wide x 18' long, fringe not included)
  • Colors: Navy, brick red, ivory, sage green, light blue, rose
  • Design: Allover Herati (Mahi / fish) lattice field; large palmette-and-vine main border
  • Rug ID: K2094

The tight Herati repeat sits on a deep navy ground, with rose, ivory and blue florets running edge to edge. The wide red border carries bold ivory and blue palmettes between soft green vine stripes — the classic Sultanabad-district layout that suits large dining rooms, great rooms and open living spaces. The worn areas give it the soft, distressed look designers seek for antique oversized rugs.

Condition (please read): This is a genuine antique and shows its age. The field has large areas of low pile worn down to the knot foundation, most visibly through the lower-left and center of the field and in patches near the top; the borders show wear as well, most at one lower corner. A visible old repair runs across the lower border. The back carries old cloth reinforcement strips sewn on along the borders and field from past repairs. Width varies slightly from one end to the other (12' to 12'4"), the ends are bound, and the sides have been overcast. Handmade rugs, especially older ones, can be slightly crooked and vary in pile height, length and width from area to area. Each rug is photographed flat from both ends, since its color shifts depending on which way you look at it.

Care: Vacuum gently without a beater bar, rotate yearly, and use a premium rug pad, custom cut, to protect an antique foundation. Hand-knotted rugs must always be cleaned professionally, never in the home.

Care: vacuum without the beater bar and rotate it once a year. For spills, blot with a clean, damp cloth. For a deeper clean, a professional rug cleaner who works with handmade rugs is the safest choice. We clean and repair hand-knotted rugs and cut a Durahold Plus pad to this exact size.
